About OLOL

In Italian, "loreto" means "laurel." The laurel signifies honor, and the laurel leaf provides a befitting symbol for our community of faith entrusted to Our Lady. We honor her who leads us on the pathway to God. The seven laurels allude to seven as a significant Scriptural number: the seven sacraments, the seven sorrows of Mary, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto, located in Italy, venerates the house that both Christian devotion and tradition recognize as Mary’s home, the site of the Annunciation and the Incarnation. The house was moved to Italy by the Crusaders in 1294, and continues to serve as "a resting place for the soul."

A prayer dear to Christians for hundreds of years is the Litany of Our Lady of Loreto. Within this lovely prayer, we find a number of poetic images of Mary. She is described affectionately as "Gate of heaven" and "House of gold." These titles speak to our parish spirituality, emphasizing the house, the home, the domestic church. As "House of gold," Mary is the purest dwelling of the Lord; as "Gate of heaven," the triumphal arch through which the redeemed enter into the Kingdom of God.
